Rizal church named minor basilica
MANILA, Philippines — Pope Francis has elevated the St. John the Baptist Parish in Taytay, Rizal to the status of minor basilica.
The 16th-century church, which is under the Diocese of Antipolo, is the first in the province to become a minor basilica.
The designation is usually granted based on a church’s architecture, history and known liturgy or combination of such attributes.
“The Diocese is again honored to receive another grace. The St. John the Baptist Parish in Taytay received their approval on elevating the parish to a minor basilica. Details will be released on its Solemn Declaration,” the Diocese of Antipolo said in a post on Facebook yesterday.
The St. John the Baptist Parish is led by Fr. Pedrito Noel Rabonza III and parochial vicars Fr. Francis Edward Baasis and Fr. Aladin Alisbo Jr.
Earlier, the Vatican declared the Antipolo Cathedral or the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage as an international shrine.
In his pastoral message, Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos thanked God and Pope Francis for the blessings granted to the diocese.
