MANILA, Philippines — A man accused of stealing a mountain bike was killed by police in an alleged shootout in Quezon City on Thursday night.

The gunfight between Jerome Vela, 24, and operatives of the Quezon City Police District occurred in Barangay Bagong Silangan at around 11:40 p.m., according to probers.

Police were pursuing Vela after he was identified by a woman as the one who stole her bike at around 4 p.m.

The lawmen spotted Vela along Agham street, but instead of surrendering, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and opened fire.

The police officers retaliated and shot Vela in the head and body. He died at the scene.

Police said a .38-caliber handgun was recovered beside Vela, and bullet casings were retrieved.

The suspect’s corpse was turned over to a funeral parlor for safekeeping.
