NPA arms cache recovered in Northern Samar

Miriam Desacada - The Philippine Star

CATBALOGAN CITY , Philippines — Four New People’s Army (NPA) rebels who surrendered in Northern Samar on Monday led government troopers to an arms cache.

The four rebel-returnees, identified only by their aliases of Doming, 27; Medic, 21; Gwen, 25, and RC, surrendered at the 20th Infantry Battalion headquarters in Las Navas town.

The military said the four were members of the NPA’s Arctic of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee.

RC is said to be a finance officer of the NPA unit.

The recovered arms cache include anti-personnel mines, an M16 rifle, an improvised .22-caliber rifle and various types of gun magazines.

Maj. Gen. Camilo Ligayo, 8th Infantry Division commander, commended the surrenderees for their decision to lay down their arms and collaborate with the government.

Ligayo called on the other rebels, who remain in hiding, to return to the fold of the law and live a normal life.

He credited the effective implementation of local peace engagements, including dialogues with families of NPA members, for recent surrenders.
