2 NPA rebels killed in Iloilo clash

Jennifer Rendon - The Philippine Star

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — Two New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in an encounter with government troopers in Leon, Iloilo yesterday, according to the military.

John Eric Talibo and Jennifer Fariolan were members of the Sibat Platoon of the NPA’s Southern Front, Komiteng Rehiyon-Panay, Brig. Gen. Michael Samson, 301st Infantry Brigade commander, said.

There was no reported casualty on the side of the government.

The clash, which lasted for five minutes, occurred in Sitio Pagas in Barangay Ayabang.

Army soldiers said an improvised M16 rifle, two shotguns, a caliber .45 pistol, anti-personnel mines and blasting caps were among those recovered at the site of the encounter.

Samson said villagers reported the presence of the rebels, whom they accused of extortion activities in the area.

“This encounter serves as a resounding confirmation that ending the decade-long insurgency is a collective responsibility. The support and cooperation of the people have thwarted the NPA’s extortion activities,” he said.
