MANILA, Philippines — Kidnapping cases during the first half of the year decreased by at least 45 percent, according to data released yesterday by the police Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG).

From January to June, the AKG documented 12 kidnapping incidents, lower compared to 22 cases recorded during the same period in 2022.

The AKG said 10 of the cases were kidnap-for-ransom. The other two were related to casinos.

There are no cases of kidnapping connected to Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) firms, the AKG’s data showed.

For the rest of 2022, a total of 41 kidnapping cases were recorded, 18 of which were POGO-related while 22 were categorized as kidnap-for-ransom. One incident happened in a casino.

Data showed that 12 people have been implicated in the kidnappings, four of whom are Filipinos.

The other suspects are foreigners: four Chinese, three Malaysians and a South Korean.
