Court OKs Lapid slay gunman’s transfer

Ralph Edwin Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A Las Piñas City court has approved a motion to transfer the self-confessed killer of broadcaster Percy Lapid to the Philippine National Police Custodial Center at Camp Crame.

The Las Piñas Regional Trial Court Branch 254 approved the motion filed by Lt. Col. Wilfredo Sy of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Regional Special Operations Group (RSOG) seeking the transfer of Joel Escorial, ABS-CBN News reported yesterday.

“Considering the manifestation… that the NCRPO-RSOG has no detention facility and considering further the participation and execution of extrajudicial confession by said accused and to ensure the safety and security (of Escorial), motion is granted,” the order read.

This was confirmed by NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Edgar Okubo to The STAR.

According to Okubo, they received the court order for Escorial’s transfer to the PNP Custodial Center from Camp Bagong Diwa.

“We are preparing the requirements for the transfer,” he told The STAR, adding that the transfer would be done “within this week.”

Lapid, whose real name is Percival Mabasa, was gunned down on his way to work in Las Piñas City in October last year.
