Bikers with unregistered accessories safe… for now

Romina Cabrera - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The owners of motorcycles with unregistered or non-compliant top boxes will not be apprehended, at least for now, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said yesterday.

LTO chief Teofilo Guadiz said he has issued a memorandum that suspended the inspection and apprehension of motorcycles with accessories that do not conform with LTO guidelines.

Guadiz said the LTO is looking into complaints of excessive fines for the motorcycle accessories.

“The issue of hefty fines is one of the aspects of the March 2016 memorandum that is under review. Rest assured that we will do our best to come up with fines that are more affordable and practical and keep it attuned to the times,” he said in a statement.

Under the 2016 memorandum, a P5,000 fine will be imposed on motorists caught with unregistered top boxes and saddle bags.

This also includes custom-made accessories that do not conform with standards and product specifications set by the Department of Trade and Industry.

Guadiz urged motorists to register their accessories as this will ensure that the products are properly used to ensure the safety of the driver and the riding public.
