MANILA, Philippines — With skyrocketing oil prices in recent weeks, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority opened Wednesday a free solar charging station for electronic bikes and electronic scooters.

In a statement sent to reporters, the MMDA said that its solar charging station at the new MMDA office building in Brgy. Ugong, Pasig City, will be opened to the public on Monday, June 27, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the project was meant to help ease the burden of the public amid the high cost of petroleum products by providing free services to avail whenever they need to charge their e-vehicles.

He added that the project was also meant to encourage use of alternative modes of transportation and promote green and renewable energy.

“Putting up free charging stations for electronic vehicles such as e-bikes and e-scooters would encourage the public to use an alternative mode of transportation and at the same time help them save expenses from high fuel cost,” Artes said.

How does it work?

Three solar panels with a built-in inverter will be the main power source of the station with a total of six 220V charging outlets. Those who wish to charge their e-vehicles must bring their own charging cords and cables.

The charging station uses high technology, where in case solar power harvested will be insufficient to power the e-bikes being charged, the station will tap into the main power grid of the building to compensate for the shortage in power.

All excess electricity being harnessed by the solar panels will be distributed back to the building, the MMDA added in its statement.

Artes also said that he is planning to build a similar station at the MMDA headquarters in Orense, Makati to accommodate cyclists along EDSA.
