1 dead, 9 hurt in jail riot
MANILA, Philippines — A riot between rival gangs broke out at the Quezon City jail yesterday, leaving an inmate dead and nine others injured.
The Quezon City Police District said the riot started at the jail’s isolation and treatment facility at around 3 p.m.
Police said the inmates were taken to the East Avenue Medical Center for treatment. One of the detainees was declared dead on arrival.
Authorities said members of the Batang City Jail, Commando and Bahala na gangs were involved in the riot.
The situation was reportedly controlled at around 4 p.m. as more jail guards were deployed to secure the detainees.
Police and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology have yet to disclose what caused the riot.
