MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 will not increase fares after the one-month free ride on the MRT-3 ends, an official assured commuters yesterday.

“There will be no fare hike,” MRT-3 acting general manager Michael Capati told reporters.

He said MRT-3 fares would stay between P13 and P28.

Senior citizens and persons with disability are entitled to a 20 percent discount.

Capati said the month-long loss of income due to the free ride program would be subsidized by the national government.

“It will be subsidized from the P7-billion funding given to us by Congress,” he said.

Based on its revenue collection in January, the MRT-3 is expected to lose around P2.7 million per day because of the free rides.

The MRT-3 management is offering free rides until April 30.
