MANILA, Philippines — Five senior officers of the Philippine Coast Guard were nominated to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to replace PCG chief Admiral Leopoldo Laroya, who will retire from the service today.

Vice Admirals Eduardo Fabricante, Oscar Endona Jr., Artemio Abu, Rolando Lizor Punzalan and Rear Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan are the contenders for the PCG post.

Fabricante, who is the deputy commandant for PCG operations, is the most senior among the five officers.

Endona is the deputy commandant for administration while Abu heads the Maritime Safety Services Command.

Punzalan and Gavan head the Marine Environmental Protection Command and Maritime Security and Law Enforcement Command, respectively.

The PCG officers were endorsed to Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, who will recommend to President Duterte the next PCG commandant.

The PCG is an attached agency of the DOTr.

Duterte appointed Laroya as PCG chief on Sept. 8, 2021.
