Grenade found in Port Area
MANILA, Philippines — A grenade was found in a wooden cart in Port Area, Manila yesterday morning.
The M26 fragmentation grenade was discovered by pedicab driver Rodney Dayo at the corner of Roberto Oca Sr. and Railroad streets beside The Philippine Star’s office at around 9 a.m., according to Manila Police District (MPD) precinct commander Capt. Rey Bundalian.
The rusty grenade had no pin when it was found by Dayo, police said.
The safety lever was discovered 11 feet away from the cart, the MPD said.
Probers said they would investigate a man seen standing beside the cart based on a photo taken during the routine rounds of a security guard of the Philippine Ports Authority.
Bundalian ruled out a threat against The STAR.
“It’s possible that someone in possession of the grenade just wanted to get rid of the explosive,” Bundalian said.
Probers will still look into the possibility that the grenade was left in the area to scare someone, MPD Station 13 commander Lt. Col. Robert Domingo said.
Members of the MPD Explosives and Ordnance Division detonated the grenade before noon yesterday.
