MANILA, Philippines — La Union Gov. Emmanuel Ortega III approved the extension of the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) status in Luna town until the end of this month.

Meanwhile, Naguilian, Aringay, Tubao and Agoo were downgraded to general community quarantine for two weeks starting today.

The five towns have been under MECQ since April 6 amid a surge in cases.

Luna Mayor Rachel Pinzon was among those who had contracted the virus.

The active cases in the town was down to 86 on Monday compared to 90 on April 5.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Naguilian also dropped to 44; Aringay, 84, and Tubao, 68, as of Tuesday.

Agoo, on the other hand, logged 126 cases as of Saturday.

Bangar and Bauang will remain under MECQ until April 26.

Ortega has yet to decide on the quarantine status in San Fernando City, which is supposed to be under MECQ until today.  The city has 402 active cases.

In Pangasinan, Mayor Jogane Rarang of Anda issued an executive order placing Purok 5 in Barangay Tondol under indefinite lockdown as the number of COVID-19 cases rose.
