Malate fire: 1 dead, 200 families homeless

MANILA, Philippines — A 69-year-old woman died and 200 families lost their homes in a fire that reached third alarm in Malate, Manila yesterday.

The fire along P. Ocampo street reached third alarm at 3:30 a.m. and was put out around three hours later.

Lydia Bernal was initially reported missing until her remains were found.

The fire razed 80 houses and caused P500,000 in damage.

Arson probers are still investigating the cause of the fire.
