Caloocan bans Chinese New Year activities
MANILA, Philippines — Caloocan Mayor Oscar Malapitan has ordered the prohibition of activities to celebrate Chinese New Year on Feb. 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his Executive Order 006-21, Malapitan declared “any form of mass gatherings such as street parties, stage shows, parades, street games, including dragon dances and other crowd-drawing activities for or in relation to the celebration of the 2021 Chinese New Year shall not be allowed” in the city to prevent mass gatherings and avoid potential COVID-19 transmission.
He also ordered that any private gathering or celebration “held in private places, or in other public places such as malls, markets, restaurants, cafes, parks, commercial spaces” and others should accommodate only 10 people, as mandated by the national government.
Malapitan also called on businesses to implement a 50-percent seating or dine-in capacity in their establishments while places of worship should enforce a 30-percent seating capacity.
He also directed barangay officials and city police to enforce the city government’s ordinances banning firecrackers, regulating the sale of liquor and prohibiting drinking in public.
