Strong quake hits Camarines Norte

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Camarines Norte yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

Phivolcs said the temblor, which  occurred at about 6 a.m., was felt at Intensity 5, which is classified as strong, in Vinzons, Daet, Jose Panganiban, Labo, Paracale and San Vicente towns.

The quake was felt at Intensity 4 or moderately strong in Capalonga, Camarines Norte and Sipocot, Camarines Sur.

Instrumental Intensity 4 was recorded in Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte; Intensity 3 in Guinayangan, Quezon; Intensity 2 in Gumaca, Mauban and Lopez, also in Quezon, and Intensity 1 in Marikina City, Pasig City and San Rafael, Bulacan.

Instrumental intensity refers to ground shaking detected by seismic instruments.

Phivolcs said three aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3 to 4.4 were recorded as of 8:30 a.m. yesterday.

The magnitude 4.4 aftershock occurred at about 7:30 a.m. It was felt at Intensity 2 in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

In Occidental Mindoro, a magnitude 4.9 quake struck at 7:49 a.m. It was felt at Intensity 3 in San Jose and Magsaysay, also in Occidental Mindoro and Coron, Palawan. – Cet Dematera
