45 more cops infected

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines  — Forty-five more personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP) have tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19, bringing the number of infections in the police force to 754.

Six of the latest cases are personnel of the Calabarzon police.

PNP data showed that 357 or 47.34 percent of the infected personnel have recovered. The death toll remains at nine.

PNP chief Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa said more than 200 of the patients are in Cebu.

“It is sad to note that of the nine casualties of COVID-19 in the PNP, the latest four came from Cebu,” Gamboa told a news briefing at Camp Vicente Lim.

Gamboa said the PNP is rushing the construction of a COVID testing center in Cebu that will cater to PNP personnel.

Construction of the medical laboratory started last week. The PNP allotted P10 million for the project.

Brig. Gen. Albert Ignatius Ferro, Central Visayas police director, said they expect to finish the laboratory in one month as it needs to be tested and accredited by the Department of Health before it can operate. Ed Amoroso, Iris Hazel Mascardo/The Freeman
