MANILA, Philippines — The use of injectable skin lightening agents may lead to the transmission of infectious diseases and have toxic effects on the body, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said yesterday.

In an advisory, the FDA said it has not approved any injectable products for skin lightening but several beauty salons are offering such products.

The agency warned that the improper use may cause the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis B and C when administered by a non-medical practitioner or done in a non-sterile facility.

According to FDA, injectable glutathione has been approved only as an adjunct treatment in cisplatin chemotherapy for cancer.

The agency also warned that use of injectable whiteners can have toxic effects on the liver, kidneys, and nervous system and may lead to Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
