Pagasa delists Ompong, Rosita, Usman
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has removed from its list the names of three destructive cyclones that hit the country last year.
PAGASA decommissioned the names Ompong, Rosita and Usman and replaced them with Obet, Rosal and Umberto.
Ompong, Rosita and Usman will no longer be used by the weather bureau, according to PAGASA administrator Vicente Malano.
PAGASA decommissions the name of a cyclone once it leaves at least 300 deaths or causes P1 billion in damage to crops and infrastructure.
Ompong, which slammed the Philippines in September last year, left 82 people dead and over P33.9-billion damage to agriculture and infrastructure.
Rosita hit the country in October 2018, leaving 20 persons dead and P2.9 billion worth of damage to crops and infrastructure.
Usman battered the Philippines last December, killing at least 156 individuals and destroyed P5.4 billion worth of infrastructure.
An average of 20 cyclones hit the Philippines every year.
