MANILA, Philippines— The Philippine Institue of Volcanology and Seismology raised Alert Level 2 Status over Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental after a volcanic earthquake.

Philvocs’ monitoring network recorded one volcanic earthquake in Kanlaon during the past 24 hours.

In its advisory, Phivolcs said the alert level 2 status means that the volcano is undergoing a moderate level of unrest due to probable intrusion of magma at depth that may or may not lead to a magmatic eruption.

Phivolcs warned the local government units and the public against entering the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone. It said the public is prohibited due to the possibility of sudden “hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.”

The institute also asked the Civil Aviation authorities to advise its pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as it may emit ejecta from phreatic eruption that can be hazardous to aircraft.

Phivolcs vowed to closely monitor the volcano’s activity.

“Any new development will be relayed to all concerned,” it said.

Kanlaon is the highest point in the Visayas at 2,465 meters or 8,087 feet above sea level.

Phivolcs also raised Alert Level 2 last November 15 after it recorded increased volcanic activities specifically  279  “deep”volcanic earthquakes in just a day.  —Rosette Adel
