P790,000 seized in Manila jail search

MANILA, Philippines — At least P790,000 in cash were confiscated during Oplan Linis Piitan in the Manila City Jail (MCJ) yesterday.
MCJ spokesman Senior Inspector Jayrex Bustinera said the cash, stuffed in water bottles, had been found hidden behind the wall of dormitory 11 during the raid jointly launched by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, the Manila Police District, and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.
The cash was allegedly collected as dormitory fund for the inmates’ yearend celebration, Bustinera said.
“Our management will conduct a deeper investigation as to the source and use of the said amount of money,” Bustinera said.
Majority of the inmates in the dormitory belong to the Sigue-Sigue Sputnik gang.
There were no illegal drugs confiscated during the raid, Bustinera said.
