CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines —Five people died in a fire that razed their home in this city yesterday.
The remains of Connie, 24, was found in the bathroom while the bodies of Louie, 10; Michelle, 13; Mary Grace, 12, and Mark Kenneth, 21, all surnamed Serillo, were found near the windows of their two-story house in Sitio San Vicente, Corrales extension in Barangay Puntod.
Four other family members were injured in the fire.
City fire marshal Superintendent Richard Arbutante said a local emergency dispatch center received a call at about 1:48 a.m.
Arbutante said the house of the victims was in flames when the firefighters arrived.
He said the fire was declared under control at about 2:05 a.m. The fire only affected the house of the victims as firefighters immediately trained their hoses on the houses of their neighbors.
Initial investigation showed the fire started in the kitchen.
The Serillos were the first casualties of fire in this city as the country observes Fire Prevention Month.
At least 12 people have died and around P100 million in property have been damaged in fire incidents since January, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.
The BFP said the number of fire incidents have significantly dropped compared to the same period last year.
