ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Members of the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu have been trying to escape to Sabah as military operations against them continue in the province.
Capt. Jo-Ann Petinglay, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom), said they have continued to intensify security operations in Sulu.
"Maritime security were also heightened even with the joint patrols with two other countries of Malaysia and Indonesia as a result of the trilateral cooperation agreement," Petinglay said.
"There’s a possibility some of these terrorists will really try to find their ways and sneak into nearby Sabah by pretending to be ordinary fishermen or travelers," Petinglay added.
On Monday, Sabah security forces killed Abu Paliyak, also known as Komander Paliyak Yusof, of the Abu Sayyaf kidnap-for-ransom group in an operation off Lahad Datu.
Brig. Gen. Custodio Parcon, commander of Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi, said troops have already occupied most of the islands that the Abu Sayyaf used as jump-off points for their kidnapping operations.
"We have deployed forces in the islands along the border [and] sealed the area from being used as either staging or escape routes of the criminal group and pirates that were operating that area," Parcon said.
He said Philippine forces are also in close coordination with Malaysian and Indonesian forces operating in the common border.
