MALOLOS, Philippines – The primary suspect in the killing of a family of five in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan last month pleaded not guilty during his arraignment yesterday.
The lawyer of Carmelino Ibañes also filed an urgent motion to commit the defendant to a psychiatric ward, claiming he is showing signs of insanity.
Bulacan Regional Trial Court Branch 78 Judge Gregorio Sampaga denied the motion, but granted the request of Ibañes’ lawyer Jose Cruz to allow the accused to undergo a psychiatric test.
Sampaga also ordered the transfer of Ibañes from the San Jose del Monte jail to the Bulacan provincial jail.
The next hearing was set on Aug. 11.
Ibañes was charged with rape and five counts of murder for killing Auring Dizon, 58; her daughter Estrella Carlos, 35, and Carlos’ children Donny, 11; Ella, 7, and Dexter Jr., 1. He initially admitted the crime, but retracted his statement, saying he was tortured into making a confession.
Superintendent Fitz Macariola, San Jose del Monte police chief, said they are still looking for other possible suspects, citing DNA tests which show that another weapon might have been used in the massacre.
