MMDA to send out ‘mobile classroom’
MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will dispatch a bus that will serve as a “mobile classroom” where erring motorists and pedestrians will be given lectures on road safety and the meanings of traffic signs, an official said yesterday.
MMDA officer-in-charge Tim Orbos said the agency only wants to instill discipline among motorists and pedestrians, saying that uninformed traffic violators could cause bottlenecks.
“If we truly want to improve the traffic situation in Metro Manila, we should comply with these regulations to keep the traffic moving. Discipline is the key,” Orbos said.
The MMDA has yet to set the date for dispatching the mobile classroom.
Orbos also warned pedestrians they will be charged with jaywalking if they get off or on public utility vehicles in the middle of the road or areas not designated as loading and unloading bays.
From Jan. 1 to Feb. 14, 2,211 jaywalkers have been apprehended and only 388 have settle their infractions.
Jaywalkers have the option of paying a P500 fine or rendering three hours of community service every last Friday of the month.
