CHR probes shootout with Laguna rob suspects
CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines – The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has started investigating a shootout between police officers and the suspects in a bank robbery in Sta. Cruz, Laguna last Wednesday.
Jacqueline de Quia, CHR regional director for the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), yesterday said her chief investigator is leading the probe.
Two suspects were killed in the shootout, which the CHR is questioning, saying it was an “overkill.”
De Quia said footage taken by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera near the bank showed a police officer shooting a suspect as he lay on the ground.
“We are currently studying and evaluating the video footage of the CCTV camera that was shown to us by the media,” she told The STAR.
The slain suspects have yet to be identified and claimed by their relatives.
Pablo Javier, 39, and Gerald Mendoza, 28, who were arrested in pursuit operations in Nagcarlan, Laguna shortly after the incident, denied participating in the robbery.
Senior Superintendent Ronnie Montejo, Laguna police director, said they welcome the CHR probe.
