Mayor, congressman withdraw from 2016 polls

The Philippine Star

BATANGAS CITY, Philippines – This city’s mayor and a congressman have withdrawn their candidacy in next year’s elections to give way to their relatives.

Mayor Eduardo Dimacuha arrived at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office here a few hours before the deadline for the withdrawal or cancellation of certificates of candidacy (COC) on Thursday.

Rep. Nelson Collantes of the province’s third district appeared at the Comelec provincial office at around 2 p.m. to withdraw his COC.

Dimacuha was accompanied by his daughter Beverly, who replaced him in the mayoralty race under the Liberal Party.

City administrator Narciso Macarandang said the mayor’s withdrawal in the race was decided by the whole family and has nothing to do with the his health.

Beverly will face PDP-Laban standard bearer Councilor Kristine Balmes, a known critic of the Dimacuhas.

Nelson Collantes of LP was replaced by his wife, Maria Theresa, in the congressional race.
