290 renewable energy project applications up in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY , Philippines – At least 290 applications for renewable energy projects in Mindanao with a combined capacity of 2,998.09 megawatts (MW) are awaiting approval. 

Of the 290 applications, 242 are for hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 2,147.71 MW, according to the Mindanao Power Monitoring Committee.

Also in the pipeline are 28 solar energy projects with a combined capacity of 427.25 MW, 12 biomass power projects with 144.65 MW and eight geothermal energy power projects with 278.48 MW.

“Once these projects are completed and start generating power, we can expect a more diversified and balanced energy mix in Mindanao in the coming years,” Romeo Montenegro, director of the investment promotions and public affairs office of Mindanao Development Authority, said. 

Montenegro said in a bid to push for cleaner and greener energy sources in Mindanao, regional government agencies involved in the granting of permits for these projects committed to hasten the processing and updating of renewable energy project applications in the region.
