Transport firm’s buses grounded

MANILA, Philippines - The Land Transportation, Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) yesterday grounded 208 buses of the Pangasinan Five Star Bus Co. following an inspection of the firm’s vehicles.

At least 45 buses of the company parked at its terminals in Santiago, Pasay, Cubao, Balintawak and Central Luzon have committed franchise violations, said LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez.

LTFRB’s inspection teams said most of the buses have broken or cracked windshields and windows, no seat belts and markings and have empty fire extinguishers.

The terminals were found to have insufficient seating areas and restrooms for passengers.

The team also found out that five buses had tampered chassis numbers and unauthorized engines.

Ginez clarified that some units were allowed to operate after the inspection.

“The inspection was part of our regular routine on bus companies’ terminals and their fleet to ensure the buses’ roadworthiness,” he said.

The LTFRB chief said they were still waiting for reports from its offices in Regions 2 and 3 before they could make a final report on the routine check.

The offices have until March 12 to submit their reports.
