Quake hits Leyte

Ghio Ong, Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A magnitude 3.3 earthquake jolted parts of Leyte yesterday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said the tremor happened at 6:05 a.m. with its epicenter traced at two kilometers northwest of Dagami, Leyte.

It was reportedly felt at Intensity 3 in Tanauan, Leyte and Intensity 2 in Palo, Leyte.

No damage or aftershocks were expected from the quake, Phivolcs said.

The quake, it said, had a depth of 16 km and was tectonic in origin.

A magnitude 2.6 quake was also recorded in Sarangani, Davao Occidental at 1:43 a.m. yesterday but Phivolcs said it was “unfelt.”

The Philippines is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, and is located in the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire.”

According to Phivolcs, about 20 quakes hit the country every day, but only a few are felt.
