Cops affected by 'Yolanda' to get more aid

MANILA, Philippines - Policemen affected by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in Eastern Visayas will get more aid from the Philippine National Police (PNP) to speed up the rehabilitation of police buildings and services in the area.

PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima formally accepted a donation of 20 motorcycles, 18 power generator sets, 100 office computer sets, 80 chest drawers, 100 tables and 400 chairs from the PNP Foundation Inc. through its vice chairperson Teresita Ang-See.

See was a representative of PNPFI chairman Sen. Panfilo Lacson during simple turnover ceremonies in Camp Crame on Monday.

Purisima assured the benefactors that the equipment will be put to good use in rebuilding efforts for the region that was severely devastated by the super typhoon.

"This generous donation of PNPFI will surely go a long way in restoring the capability of local police units to continue performing the duty to serve and protect the people," Purisima said in a statement.

Purisima instructed Police Director Gil Hitosis, PNP Director for Logistics, to ensure immediate and equitable distribution of the donated equipment to PNP units in Leyte and Samar provinces that were severely affected by the typhoon.

Hitosis said a distribution plan has been prepared in coordination with Police Regional Office 8 officials under Chief Superintendent Henry Losañes.

The PNPFI was established in 2000 by private citizens inspired by similar organizations in other countries such as the New York City Police Foundation and the National Crime Prevention Council in Singapore that strongly activate the role of civil society in the prevention of crime.
