Teachers' shuffle to do poll duty mulled

MANILA, Philippines - Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas said on Tuesday that there is a proposal that teachers, especially who are assigned in areas where political rivalries are intense, to do poll duty in another place.
During a briefing on the recently-concluded barangay elections, Roxas said he will discuss his suggestion in reshuffling of teachers during polls with Education Secretary Armin Luistro.
"Pinag-aaralan pa natin ang viability ng proposal na ito na ang guro ay i-assign sa ibang lugar para umiiwas na maipit sa hidwaan," Roxas said.
He noted that teachers are attached or connected with the people, particularly the rival candidates in the area.
"Kilala nila ang mga ito dahil doon nga sila nakatira. Dun sila umuuwi," Roxas said.
Roxas said the plan to deploy policemen to act as special board of election tellers where teachers were afraid to report for poll duty on Monday was a success because these people were not from the area.
"Matagumpay ang pulis bilang BETs dahil hindi sila subjected sa away at hidwaan ng mga nangtutunggali doon sa lugar," he said.
The Philippine National Police had deployed more than 1,500 cops to several provinces in Mindanao including Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur in lieu of the teachers who refused to do poll duty for security reasons.
Roxas, however, said that with the success of the PNP's security preparations and contingency measures to quell and keep in check the private arm groups out to disrupt the conduct of the elections, the teachers will eventually be performing their regular poll duties.
