Cigarette butt causes sugarcane fire

Raymund Catindig - The Philippine Star

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – A lighted cigarette butt caused a fire that razed four hectares of sugarcane owned by the Ecofuel Management Corp. in Delfin Albano, Isabela last March 30, according to belated police reports.

Chief Superintendent Rodrigo de Gracia, Cagayan Valley police director, cited findings of the Bureau of Fire Protection that the fire was caused by a lighted cigarette butt thrown in an adjacent lot with cogon grass on the night of March 30. The fire quickly spread to the sugarcane plantation.
