Comelec orders revision of votes in 2 Kabunsuan towns
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has ordered the re-canvassing of the statement of votes (SOV) by precincts from two towns in Shariff Kabunsuan that are the subjects of an electoral case between two candidates in last year’s gubernatorial polls.
In two resolutions signed by outgoing Comelec Chairman Resurreccion Borra, the poll body ordered the Municipal Boards of Canvassers (MBOCs) of the towns of Parang and Sultan Mastura to reconvene and conduct the retabulation of the SOV.
The SOV shows the summary of the results of the ballot counting done at the precinct level.
Until now, the Comelec has not proclaimed the winning governor and eight of the 10 board members in Shariff Kabunsuan due to the electoral protest filed by gubernatorial candidates Datu Tucao Mastura and Datu Bimbo Sinsuat Jr. against each other.
The resolutions stemmed from the petition filed by Sinsuat covering the two municipalities where, he claimed, there was cheating in last year’s polls.
Mastura’s case, on the other hand, covered the towns of Datu Odin Sinsuat and Datu Blah Sinsuat. It was not immediately known if the Comelec has already ruled on his petition.
In the two resolutions both dated Jan. 28, the Comelec directed the MBOCs in Parang and Sultan Mastura to “reconvene, not later than five days from receipt thereof, with due notice to all parties concerned.”
Two weeks ago, some 150 residents of Shariff Kabunsuan staged a rally in front of the Comelec main office in Intramuros,
So far, the Comelec has proclaimed only Vice Gov. Ibrahim Ibay, who now serves as acting governor, and two provincial board members.
The residents complained that the delay in the proclamation has disrupted the operations at the provincial capitol and caused a conflict between the supporters of Mastura and Sinsuat.
Shariff Kabunsuan used to be part of Maguindanao until 2006 when it became a province, so who ever wins in last year’s polls will become its first elected governor.
