Ex-Surigao exec fined

The Sandiganbayan has convicted a former provincial administrator of Surigao del Norte for engaging in private law practice despite his government position.

The anti-graft court ordered Carlos Egay to pay a P5,000 fine with subsidiary imprisonment in case of insolvency.

Records showed Egay offered notarial services in his office, used government vehicles for his court appearances, and even used provincial personnel for his cases.

The Sandiganbayan said the position of provincial administrator is not covered by Memorandum Circular No. 17 of the Office of the President which allows appointive public officials to engage in other jobs provided these do not interfere with their official functions. – Sandy Araneta
