Love triangle eyed in Cagayan gambling lord’s ambush-slay

-
TUGUEGARAO CITY — This city’s police chief were given 60 days to solve the murder of a suspected gambling lord or else face relief from his post.

Chief Supt. Dominador Resos Jr., Cagayan Valley police director and Supt. Antonio Paguirigan has until March 16 to find out who was responsible in the killing of Bienvenido "Anchung" De Guzman and make a definite case ready for filing against them by that time.

Resos said one possible motive for last week’s killing being investigated by the police here is the allegation of a love triangle involving De Guzman, his common-law-wife and another man. This aside from the jueteng angle which the police had previously identified as a possible motive.

Resos said the perpetrators behind the killing of 59-year-old De Guzman, tagged as the jueteng kingpin here, could have done this in retaliation for his having a kept woman.

It was further claimed that this unnamed woman allegedly wanted out of the relationship with De Guzman in favor of another man. De Guzman, however, reportedly refused to give up his relationship with the girl resulting in frequent quarrels between the two before his reported slay.

Resos said that investigators here conjectured that either the woman, wanting to cut her relationship with De Guzman, or her lover, or both, might have planned the killing.

De Guzman was shot dead by two motorcycle riding men in front of the Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao while he and his companion Celso Vinarao were biking towards the Cagayan National High School sports complex early morning last Jan. 15. Vinarao was wounded during the incident. — Charlie Lagasca
