Teachers must be IT ready

People Power Coalition senatorial candidate Solita Monsod proposed regular re-training of teachers in order for them to meet the demands of modern technology.
According to Monsod, the teachers have to be educated on the skills required in the age of technology to avoid being left behind by our neighbors.
"The teachers have to understand that in order for our educational system to be competitive, they themselves have to undergo training to update their skills according to the times," said Monsod.
The respected economist added that with the passage of the Information Technology law, the students are going to learn more with teachers that are computer proficient.
Monsod said that the planned computerization of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports should be accompanied with complementary training for the teachers for it to be more successful.
"Whats the use of all these equipment if theres no training program for the teachers that will make these computers more useful. With teachers that are properly trained, the use of the computers can be integrated in the lessons," said Monsod.
Monsod suggested that since there will be more computers in the schools, updated information on different subjects in the curriculum can be drawn not only from books but also from the web.
"Its about time we maximize the knowledge that can be acquired through the Internet. Almost everything under the sun can be found there," said Monsod.
"Can you imagine, grade school students from the provinces making full use of what modern technology has to offer. The prospects are simply mind blowing," beamed Monsod.
