Cebu City pet adoptions soar

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City has set a new record in animal welfare, with the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) reporting its highest number of pet adoptions to date.

From January to August 2026, 170 rescued dogs and cats have already found new homes—surpassing all previous full-year totals and marking a 360 percent increase from the adoptions recorded in 2025.

Mayor Nestor Archival, who visited the city’s Animal Care and Control Center to meet adoptable pets, praised the community’s compassion and commitment.

“Atong mga pets kabahin sa atong pamilya, ug angay silang ampingan,” Archival said.

Archival thanked everyone who was involved in the process.

“I want to thank everyone who has adopted, fostered, volunteered, donated, or simply opened their hearts to animals in need. Your support makes this record possible.”

Archival also acknowledged an anonymous donor who recently gave three sacks of dog food, saying such contributions help sustain the care of rescued pets awaiting families.

Adoption figures rose from 51 in 2022 to 62 in 2023, then surged to 138 in 2024 before dropping to 37 in 2025.

This year’s rebound, Archival noted, reflects both stronger advocacy and the generosity of residents.

The mayor also urged responsible ownership, reminding pet owners to vaccinate, spay, or neuter their animals and provide proper care to ensure both animal health and community safety.

“If you are thinking of getting a pet, don’t shop. Adopt. There are dogs and cats waiting for a home and a family to love them,” Archival emphasized.

The DVMF continues to welcome residents for adoption, vaccination, and spay-neuter services, reinforcing its role in Cebu City’s animal welfare efforts.
