Manila flood control project underway
MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways said yesterday they have embarked on a flood control project in Manila.
According to a statement, the project consists of repair and dredging of drainage in commercial and residential areas including Quiapo and Binondo, where flood stations are located.
The MMDA, which handles work at pumping stations, awarded a contract to J.D. Legaspi Construction, following a bidding conducted in December last year.
The company will design, build, rehabilitate, and upgrade existing pumping stations, which will divert floodwater to rivers.
The contractor uses the technology of Grundfos Philippines, Inc., to replace the antiquated pumping systems.
The technology ensures greater pumping capacity and increases trash removal to reduce flooding significantly.
