Parañaque’s expanded truck ban starts today

Perseus Echeminada - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The local government of Parañaque will start implementing today its expanded truck ban to ease traffic congestion in the city with the planned closure of the Sucat Interchange.

Mayor Edwin Olivarez said trucks will no longer be allowed to ply the city’s major roads including Dr. A. Santos Avenue (Sucat Road), East and West Service Roads of the South Luzon Expressway, Ninoy Aquino Avenue, Airport Road and Quirino Avenue.

The ban will be in effect Mondays to Fridays, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., and again from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a window period from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Covered by the ban are 10-wheeler cargo trucks, trailer trucks, transit mixers, and those hauling sand and other heavy payloads.

“Six-wheeler trucks are exempted from the ban to allow logistics and cargo forwarding companies to move their cargo to and from the airports and their warehouses any time,” Olivarez said.

He said the truck ban would ease the effects of the planned closure of the Sucat Interchange on traffic in the area.

The mayor said they have met with truckers’ groups to inform them of the expanded truck ban.

“We recognize the contribution of truckers to the city’s growth. That is why we are implementing a selective truck ban to lessen the impact on business,” he said.

Olivarez said the city’s existing truck ban, passed years ago by the city council, is being implemented only on secondary roads.

Trucks passing through major roads should use the center lanes to prevent traffic jams.
