HPG: Car theft rates dip before 2013 polls

MANILA, Philippines - The rate of car thefts within five months before this year’s elections is lower compared to two previous polls, the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) said yesterday.

HPG director Chief Superintendent Arazzad Subong said an average of 2.4 vehicles – 1.2 motor vehicles and 1.2 motorcycles – were stolen daily since January this year.

Subong said the HPG recorded an average of 5.1 and 5.9 stolen vehicles a day within five months before the elections in 2007 and 2010 respectively.

He attributed the drop to the increased coordination between the HPG and local police units to fight car thieves and carjackers.
