Accountant survives slay try in Valenzuela

Manila, Philippines - A 58-year-old accountant suffered three gunshot wounds when two motorcycle-riding attackers shot at him as he went out of his house in Valenzuela Friday.

Jaime Ignacio de la Cruz, a resident of Barangay Canumay, was still confined yesterday at the Valenzuela City Medical Center due to gunshot wounds in the belly, leg and elbow.

“The victim is an accountant but I’m not certain where he is connected. He is still in the hospital and we have yet to receive updates of the case from our investigators,” Police Officer 2 Jover Ireneo told The STAR.

De la Cruz was about to open the main gate of his house in Victoria Village when he was shot at around 5 a.m. “The (gunmen) appeared to be just waiting for the victim to get out of the house,” Ireneo said.

The attackers, both wearing black jackets, sped away after the shooting. The motorcycle did not have a license plate. Police recovered at the scene of the crime four shells for a .45 caliber pistol and two slugs.

Valenzuela City police chief Senior Superintendent Eric Reyes has formed a team, led by PO3 Rodolfo Tumbaga, to investigate the attack. No motive has been established.

Reyes sent to the Northern Police District crime laboratory the recovered shells and slugs for ballistic examination and cross matching to determine whether the weapon used in trying to kill De la Cruz may have been used in other crimes in Valenzuela.
