MANILA, Philippines - The man who allegedly tried to abduct the father of singer Sarah Geronimo underwent inquest proceedings yesterday.

Quezon City Assistant City Prosecutor Reuben Veradio recommended that Paulino Mercado, 43, be charged in court with kidnapping and serious illegal detention.

Mercado, an aircraft mechanic, allegedly used a stun gun and tried to kidnap Delfin Geronimo, 55, at the basement parking lot of ELJ Building at the ABS-CBN compound.

Mercado told Veradio he had no intention of kidnapping Geronimo and just wanted to rob him.

The prosecutor agreed with the recommendation of the investigator, Police Officer3 Ranilo Mendoza, to charge Mercado with kidnapping after a black nylon cord and a set of car plates were found in his possession.

Mendoza also said they seized a navy blue Hyundai Grace van, which had curtained windows, from Mercado. No bail was recommended for the suspect’s release.

Mendoza earlier said Geronimo was told at past noon Sunday that a person was waiting for him at the basement to hand over a gift.

But at the basement, Mercado allegedly tried to attack Geronimo with a stun gun and push him into a van. But Geronimo was able to shove the suspect away and escape. The victim asked for help, resulting in the suspect’s arrest by a security guard.– Reinir Padua, Jerry Botial
