Cops kill suspect in rob-slay of med student

MANILA, Philippines – One of three arrested suspects in the rob-slay of a 20-year-old student in Tondo, Manila was shot dead when he allegedly tried to escape from police custody last night in Tondo, Manila.

Kenneth Capili, 21, reportedly grabbed the service firearm of one of his police escorts, Police Officer 3 Fernando Manzon, while he was being brought to a hospital for medical checkup, according to homicide investigator PO2 Lester Evangelista.

The other escort, PO2 Dommel Fajardo, shot at Capili, hitting him in the neck. They rushed Capili to the Tondo Medical Center, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The Manila Police District declared as solved the rob-slay of Mary Roxanne Musngi, of Gagalangin, Tondo, who was studying medicine at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. She is reportedly the granddaughter of a former senior police aide of Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim.

Musngi was reportedly on her way home at past 3 a.m. Friday after a group study session when she was blocked by three men riding in tandem on a motorcycle at the corner of Gen. Lukban and Juan Luna streets. Two of the men alighted and grabbed her bag, but Musngi tried to fight off her attackers. One of the suspects stabbed her repeatedly.

“Task Force Musngi,” led by Raxabago police station chief Superintendent Roderick Mariano, arrested Capili; Justin Bautista, 21; and a 16-year-old boy.

Mariano said the three suspects robbing and killing Musngi, whose cellular phone and medical books were recovered from the suspects’ possession.

In an interview, Bautista said it was the 16-year-old who drove the XRM motorcycle (8770-NN), while he and Capili held up the victim. He said it was Capili who stabbed the victim.

Meanwhile, police released yesterday Michael Baylon, 29, earlier tagged by four witnesses as a suspect in the case.
