Helper runs amuck in Las Piñas

MANILA, Philippines - A man who worked as a helper at a delivery firm ran amuck in Las Piñas City Friday night and was shot dead by a policeman he attacked.

Senior Police Officer 2 said Efren Lapidez, a resident of BF Homes in Martinville, Barangay Manuyo Dos, reportedly came from a drinking session when he started running and hacking people with a bolo along Ilang-ilang street in Paramount Village, Talon Tres at around 11 p.m.

The residents called for help, and Police Officer 3 Robert Bulong, who is part of the Office of the City Mayor’s security group, responded. According to reports, he tried to intervene but Lapidez attacked him but missed.

Bulong shot Lapidez, hitting him in the head. Lapidez was declared dead on arrival at the Las Piñas District Hospital.

Senior Superintendent Amado Clifton Empiso, Las Piñas police chief, said they are conducting a follow-up investigation of the incident and that Bulong surrendered after the shooting and is in their custody.   – Rhodina Villanueva
