Tinga clinches second term as Taguig mayor
May 16, 2004 | 12:00am
Election officers found no need to finish the canvassing of votes in the soon-to-be City of Taguig as the lead of incumbent officials over their closest rivals were declared insurmountable and irreversible.
Re-electionist Mayor Sigfrido Tinga, of the Lakas-CMD, officially earned his second consecutive term as he was declared the winner of the mayoralty race early yesterday morning.
With votes from 1,261 out of the 1,657 precincts counted, election canvassers said it was statistically impossible for Tingas closest rival, Ma. Loida Labao-Alzona, to catch up with the incumbents 86,168 votes.
She garnered 55,387 votes.
The other two candidates, Rene Casas and Ferdinand Quilitano, each had less than a thousand votes as the counting was officially closed at 6:30 a.m.
Tingas runningmate, George Elias, won in the vice mayoralty race with more than 100 percent advantage over his closest rival Ferdinand Santos. Elias garnered 88,959 while Santos had 42,056.
Election officials, however, said they have yet to finalize the results of the counting for councilors, which they considered "tight and too close to call."
Meanwhile, Pateros re-electionist Mayor Rosendo Capco was also proclaimed the winner in the local elections with 10,138 votes.
He closest rival, Willie Buenaventura, was second with 7,408 votes out of the 36,976 registered voters.
The canvassing of votes were finished as early as 3 a.m. on Thursday but Capco was officially proclaimed at 10:30 p.m.
According to election officials, the proclamation was delayed because they have to deal with various complaints from other candidates.
The incumbent representative for the joint district of Taguig and Pateros was also a runaway winner in this years election.
Rep. Allan Peter Cayetano has garnered 103,473 votes while his closest rival Isidro Garcia had 57,188.
As Tinga, Capco and Cayetano celebrated earlier than expected, the other incumbent officials in southern Metro Manila have kept their fingers crossed.
In Pasay City, Mayor Wenceslao Trinidad still does not have a clear lead over his rival Ricardo Santos as the canvassing reached its halfway mark.
As of midnight yesterday, Trinidad has 38,221 votes while Santos garnered 30,270 votes, according to election officials.
It is also a close fight between vice mayoralty candidates Tony Calixto, who garnered 35,775, and Greg Alcera, who had 31,219.
Incumbent Rep. Consueto Dy is ahead of Emmy Calixto with 38,448 and 29,512 votes, respectively.
The votes counted in Pasay City only constitute 60 out of 1,372 precincts. Winners, however, are expected to be proclaimed today.
Meanwhile, Muntinlupa City Mayor Jaime Fresnedi continues to maintain a slight lead over rival Elizabeth Masangkay on the third day of the canvassing.
Fresnedi has 36,096 votes while Masangkay has 27,910 as of midnight the other day.
Rep. Rozzano Rufino Biazon, on the other hand, has an almost 100 percent advantage over his rival Patricio Boncayao Jr.
Biazon garnered 43,459 votes while Boncayao had 22,658.
Winners in Parañaque City elections were also expected to be proclaimed early today. As of press time, former city mayor Pablo Olivarez is in the lead with a slight advantage over Florencio Bernabe.
Actress Alma Moreno, estranged wife of incumbent city mayor Joey Marquez, remains in third place.
In the congressional race, Tomas Banaga Jr. has taken the lead over incumbent First District Rep. Ed Zialcita.
In the second district, former National Security Adviser Roilo Golez has a clear lead over Marquez, who earlier conceded.
Election officials said they have not prepared any partial tally as of yesterday.
