The Liberal Party threw their full support yesterday behind the candidacy of lawyer Roman Romulo, who is running for the lone congressional seat of Pasig City.
Romulo admitted the support of the local chapter of the Liberal Party further bolstered his chances of winning in the May 10 polls.
"The officers and members of the Liberal Party in Pasig City made this decision after citing differences in principles and lack of support from their current congressional candidate," Romulo said in a statement.
Romulo, an independent, said he has been consistently leading the surveys in the congressional race.
The Liberal Partys local chapter initially fielded incumbent Vice Mayor Lorna Bernardo as its standard bearer for the congressional seat in the coming polls.
But in a meeting held on April 22, the 12-man executive committee decided to withdraw its support from Bernardo because of a disagreement.
In his letter dated April 24, Dr. Quirino del Rosario, vice chairman of the local Liberal Party, informed Bernardo that the working relationship between the Vanguards, her parallel organization, and the party leadership and six candidates for councilors did not work out according to party expectations, prompting the withdrawal.
After long deliberations and consultations with party members, Del Rosario and company decided to throw their support for Romulo because of his "integrity, qualifications and sincerity to serve the people of Pasig City."
Aside from Bernardo, Romulo will be running against Dodot Jaworski, of the Lakas-CMD and incumbent Rep. Toti Carino, of the Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP).
Earlier, former Senate president Jovito Salonga also endorsed Romulos candidacy, saying "Roman Romulo is the most qualified and morally fit to represent the people of Pasig."
Romulo comes from an illustrious clan of statesmen including Gen. Carlos P. Romulo and his father, Executive Secretary Alberto Romulo. Non Alquitran
