9-year-old schoolboy outsmarts kidnapper

A smart nine-year-old boy managed to slip away from his would-be abductor who was later arrested by alerted authorities near the victim’s school in Sta. Quiteria, Caloocan City Friday afternoon.

Police station Investigation and intelligence chief Superintendent Dionicio Borromeo identified the kidnap victim as Mark Edward Claunan, a grade three pupil of Sta. Quiteria Elementary School, residing at 182 Cleofas Street, Sta. Quiteria, Caloocan City.

PO1 Marlon Bingayen, said the alleged kidnapper, Jona Ramirez, 26, a resident of 14 Legal St., GSIS Village, Project 8, Quezon City was detained at the police detention cell pending investigation and filing of criminal charges against her.

Initial investigation that the young boy was playing outside the school premises with his classmates while waiting for his mother after the morning school session when the suspect approached and told him that she had been asked by the victim’s mother to fetch him.

Bingayen said the suspect and the victim had already walked down the street when the young boy suspected that somehow something was wrong. The suspect had asked him to remove a cheap costume necklace he was wearing and give it to her.

So, Mark Edward told the suspect he had left his lunch box at school and had to go back and get it. The suspect allowed him to go, agreeing to wait for him at a nearby church.

As he ran back to school, the boy saw his mother and told her of the incident. Evengeline, Mark’s mother, then reported it to the police who caught the suspect still waiting for Mark near the church. At the police station, the suspect denied she had kidnapped the boy. She said she only wanted to get the necklace from him, when the victim’s mother showed she was serious about pressing charges of kidnapping against the suspect, the latter threatened to make good her intention of kidnapping the boy when she gets out of jail.

"I told you I did not kidnap him, I just wanted to get his necklace but if you are persistent, I will kidnap him as soon as I get out of detention," the suspect warned.
