Allies of Manila Mayor Lito Atienza at the Manila City Council has overwhelmingly thrown their support for the P180-million Mehan Gardens construction through a resolution passed during last Thursdays session.
In a statement, the resolution sponsored by Manila Second District Councilor Pacifico Laxa and Fifth District Councilor Ricardo Isip voted to approve the expression of support for the project. A total of 31 councilors out of the 38 belongs to Mayor Atienzas Liberal Party.
The controversial construction of the proposed new City College of Manila (CCM) buildings in the historical botanical garden is being opposed by conservationists, saying the project would lead to the destruction of the site.
"We in Manila are not unmindful of our heritage and neither are we insensitive to environmental concerns. Our culture is continuously evolving depending on the needs of the times," said Atienzas councilor-son, Kim, also of the Fifth District.
The resolution echoed the arguments of Mayor Atienza that the project will not in anyway destroy the garden. The new CCM will enable the city government to move the school out of its Philippine National Bank building on Escolta in Sta. Cruz.
The old building will also be sold to spare the Manila City government of the P350 million balance from the P500 million purchase of the property years ago. The building will eventually be sold to cover the balance. Jose Aravilla
