Atienza launches LP campaign in Manila

- Mike Frialde -
The Liberal Party launched yesterday its Manila campaign with no less than re-electionist City Mayor Lito Atienza heading the field of hopefuls.

Atienza chose Manila City Administrator Ernesto Dionisio as his running mate. Also included in the party’s "Performance Team" were a merry-mix of new and veteran candidates that included 36 city council candidates, running for seats in the city’s six districts and five congressional candidates. The party has decided not to field a candidate in the sixth district.

Gunning for congressional seats are Martin Isidro (First District), Nestor Ponce Jr. (Second District), Leonardo Fugoso (Third District), Rudy Bacani (Fourth District) and Joey Hizon (Fifth District).

Among the party’s field of candidates for the city council were popular movie personalities Larry "Pipoy" Silva, Cita Astals and Lou Veloso.

The party signaled the start of its campaign with a mass and a proclamation rally at the city’s Bonifacio Shrine near the city hall amid at least a hundred supporters waving red flaglets and carrying streamers.

Aside from the red-shirted supporters, the proclamation site was festooned with red and white balloons. Red, the mayor’s favorite color, also stood for love and courage, according to his supporters.

"I need your support this coming May 14 elections so that we can pursue our programs that will definitely improve the lives of every Manileño, specially the destitute in Tondo, Malate, and Pandacan," Atienza said in his address to the crowd.

Shouting "Kay Atienza kami" to the beat of drums, his supporters vowed to retain him as the city’s mayor in the coming elections.

Seen in the proclamation rally were top leaders of the Liberal Party including overall chairman Noynoy Aquino and LP senatorial bet Wigberto "Bobby" Tañada, who both urged the public to continue their support.

The proclamation rally ended at 10 a.m. when the candidates and their supporters all marched to the Commission on Elections in Intramuros to file their certificates of candidacy.

Meanwhile, former Manila Rep. Amado Bagatsing announced yesterday that he has been "finally" and chosen as the administration party’s bet in the city even as his rival former Manila mayor Mel Lopez is yet to concede.

Bagatsing made the announcement in a statement saying that no less than the People’s Power Coalition (PPC) party chair Finance Secretary Alberto Romulo and PPC National Capital Region head Sen. Renato Cayetano picked him. The declaration of Bagatsing as the official administration bet was apparently made at an affair at the Manila Peninsula Hotel.

Bagatsing was reportedly given the authority to pick who will consist the party ticket for the 44 elective positions up for grabs in the city. – Jose Aravilla
